Sep 8, 2010 - Thanks 4 posting this. I hadn't heard of this soprano until now. I looked her up and Mme. Bonney can also be found singing "Auf Flugeln des Gesanges" here on Youtube...check it out too as it is an equally beautiful song (IMHO anyway)

Sep 9, 2010 - My uncle had The Latin Ave Maria in his funeral. If it had been this version, he would have jumped out of the coffin and beat the crap out of us. Despite the title, this isnt an Ave Maria. Very funny jojospacemonkey.

katGarkia15 Says:

Sep 10, 2010 - This is my great aunt's favorite song. She use to have to sing it in choir in a catholic church. I would've never guessed this song was religious ha ha! It's beautiful. If only people still sang like this more often. Maria Callas was the best.

Tost0r Says:

Sep 10, 2010 - @TripBoomLikeThat I'm glad I've never known your uncle.

jewelmarkess Says:

Sep 10, 2010 - @katGarkia15 It's a beautiful song, wonderfully sung by great Barbara Bonney. This isn't really a religious song. It's one of German lieder (art songs). Schubert wrote it as part of a cycle of songs to words of Sir Walter Scott poem "Lady of the Lake" translated to German. It's "Ellens dritter gesang" or Ellen's third song. Here a girl, Ellen is hiding in a cave with her father and praying. BTW - Callas has never recorded this, the videos here that claim it's Callas are fakes.

SigP229R Says:

Sep 10, 2010 - Don't know why some people are so critical. This is beautiful but Nana Mouskouri also does a powerful version of this. Thanks for posting.
